Remote Access is simply the ability to operate a computer system from another location, just like sitting in front of it. Normally access is through the Internet and expects a high speed broadband connection. Dial up access is normally unreliable and slow. Windows XP Pro includes a one user host for remote desktop connection in the program package. Windows 98, ME, 2000, or XP Home can connect as the remote but not be the host computer using Microsoft's software. The State of Oregon provides a 35% tax credit for the cost of implementing remote access if it saves driving at least 45 trips per year. Full information and applications are available at MicroSphere's office or on the web directly from the State of Oregon at: http://egov.oregon.gov/ENERGY/CONS/BUS/BETC.shtml . Use the transportation link and click on "Telecommuting". Other examples of software programs such as Citirx, PC Anywhere, VNC, Timbuctu, Carbon Copy, Gotomypc.com are examples of programs that can or have provided remote access. Using remote access, it is possible to open files, print documents, manage email, faxes, schedules and calendars quickly and easily. Remote access is quite secure and encryption can be added that meets the Federal Reserve Banking Requirements for Internet banking. While on the road with remote access, orders can be placed, faxes read, anything you could normally do in the office. Using a Wi-Fi access point available at many hotels, coffee shops, libraries, etc. along with your laptop, you can be productive and efficient just about anywhere. For larger environments, Windows terminal server and Citrix offer remote access for 2 to 1000 computers without compromising performance. |
